Palácio Chiado - A very unusual restaurant
Judging from my most recent blog posts it seems like I live in Lisbon rather than London. The truth is that whenever I travel to the Portuguese capital I am delighted with the fact that the city is becoming more and more beautiful which makes me want to share it even more with those who read me.
During the last time I was in Lisbon, I went to Chiado Palace which, although not new to most Lisboners, I hadn't had yet a chance to visit.
How beautiful and detailed is the architecture of the past centuries. To think that back in the days this space served as home for several families, that here were served great banquets, and danced many balls is, at the least, fascinating.
During modern times the space was rented to the IADE University, gaining the name of institute of Art and Decoration, this is where many of today's most emblematic artists of the country studied.
Today it houses several restaurants and bars where Portuguese delicacies, oysters, meats of various types or even sushi are served.
The palace impresses any visitor as soon as one steps inside. During the restoration of the building the original features of the building were retained. Today, the old and the modern are perfectly conjugated here.
Wherever you look there are dazzling corners, made with detail and glamour, of which I highlight the imposing staircase, illuminated by the majestic stained glass that envelops it. The way the space is lit, the frescoes depicting battle scenes, the ceilings with different textures and shapes, the statue of the lion that leans out from the ceiling in permanent suicide...all of it contributes to the mysterious atmosphere of the palace.
In addition to excelling in its decoration, the space deserves to be distinguished by the variety of its gastronomic offer. Of the seven restaurants available I opted to try the Meat Bar and order the tartar served with a cured egg and toasted sourdough which by the way was delicious.
How beautiful is this resurrected city that, although cosmopolitan and modernised, preserves the spirit of the nineteenth-century Lisbon Eça de Queirós so well portrays in his works.
A julgar pelos meus mais recentes blog posts parece que vivo em Lisboa e não Londres. A verdade é que sempre que viajo até à capital portuguesa fico encantada com o facto de a cidade estar cada vez mais bonita o que me deixa com vontade de a partilhar com quem me lê.
Durante a última vez em que estive em Lisboa fui visitar o Palácio Chiado que, apesar de não ser novidade para a maioria dos Lisboetas, ainda não tinha tido oportunidade de conhecer.
Como é bonita e detalhada a arquitectura do antigamente. Pensar que em tempos este espaço serviu de casa para várias famílias, que foram aqui servidos grandes banquetes, e dançados muitos bailes é, no minímo, fascinante.
Já na modernidade o espaço foi alugado à Universidade IADE, ganhando o nome de instituto de Arte e Decoração, onde se formaram muitos dos artistas mais emblemáticos do país.
Hoje aloja vários restaurantes e bares nos quais se pode comer desde iguarias portuguesas, ostras, carnes de vários tipos ou até mesmo sushi.
O palácio impressiona qualquer visitante assim que se entra por ele adentro. Durante a recuperação do edifício mantiveram-se as características originais do mesmo. Hoje conjuga-se aqui na perfeição o antigo com o moderno.
Para onde quer que se olhe há recantos deslumbrantes, feitos com detalhe e glamour, dos quais destaco a escadaria imponente, iluminada o quanto baste pelos majestosos vitrais que a envolvem. A forma como o espaço está iluminado, os frescos ilustrando cenas de combate, os tectos com diferentes relevos e formatos, a estátua do leão que do teto se debruça em permanente suicídio, contribuem para a atmosfera misteriosa do palácio.
Para além de primar na decoração o espaço distingue-se pela variedade da sua oferta gastronómica. Dos sete restaurantes disponíveis optei por experimentar o Meat Bar e provar o tártaro do lombo servido com ovo curado e pão torrado que por sinal estava delicioso.
Que bonita é esta Lisboa ressuscitada que apesar de cosmopolita e modernizada conserva na perfeição o espírito da Lisboa novecentista que Eça de Queirós tão bem retrata nas suas obras.

After lunch I walked towards the riverside, the city and the river are old lovers. Down there Lisbon has reborn too.
As the sun faded behind the bridge that crosses Tejo I heard the river whisper to me: "stay"...
Depois do almoço desci ao rio que namora com a cidade. Também por aqui a cidade pulsa.
Enquanto o sol se despedia do dia por detrás a ponte que cruza o Tejo ouvi o rio dizer: "fica"...
