A trip to Sydney
We've had this trip planned for more than a year. What made us cross the world was the wedding of two very special people to us, Brad and Kezia. Because Sydney is so far away from London we decided that it would be fun to break the trip in two and go to Thailand first, that way I would get to visit a country I had never been before and the trip would be less tiring. However a few months ago I got an acting role in a Portuguese TV show, therefore, I was no longer available to go on such a long trip. Martin followed the initial plan, third-wheeling another couple, and I joined them the day before the wedding in Sydney.
The 24h flight, the 12h time difference, the terrible food on the plane, the lack of sleep, none of this bothered me this time because I was way too excited to be reunited with Martin after being more than a month apart from him. My flight landed earlier than his so I waited for him eagerly by the arrivals. Weirdly I felt that same excitement I remember feeling when we went on our initial dates. When we saw each other I ran into his arms and, even though we were on the other side of the world, I finally felt at home again.
Já tínhamos esta viagem planeada há mais de um ano. O que nos fez atravessar o mundo foi o casamento de um casal muito nosso amigo. Como Sydney fica tão longe na altura decidimos que iríamos primeiro à Tailândia e depois então para Sydney, com esta paragem pelo meio ficávamos a conhecer mais um sítio e a viagem seria menos cansativa. No entanto há uns meses comecei o projecto televisivo Valor da Vida e deixei de ter disponibilidade para fazer uma viagem que me roubasse tanto tempo tendo então que alterar os meus planos. O Martin seguiu o roteiro inicial na companhia de mais um outro casal amigo e eu juntei-me a eles um dia antes do casamento já em Sydney.
As 24h de voo, as 12h de diferença horária, a comida terrível servida no avião, a falta de sono, nada disso me incomodou desta vez tal era a excitação em reencontrar o Martin depois de mais de um mês sem o ver. Esperei-o ansiosamente nas chegadas uma vez que o meu voo tinha aterrado mais cedo do que o dele e voltei a sentir aquele nervosismo que me lembro de ter sentido nos nossos primeiros encontros. Quando nos vimos e nos abraçámos voltei a sentir-me em casa, mesmo estando no outro lado do mundo.
As soon as we landed in Sydney we headed to Palm Beach where the wedding took place on the following day. Since Martin and Adam are the groom's best friends, he chose to spend his last single night with us. The house we stayed at is a dream: it has an infinity pool, two of the rooms set in a tree house and a common area with sliding doors that allow an unobstructed view into the infinity of the Pacific Ocean. The wedding itself was very special and intimate. The moment Brad saw the love of his life walk down the aisle while Love Actually's soundtrack was playing was especially emotional, even Martin and Adam broke a little.
Mal aterrámos em Sydney seguimos logo para Palm Beach onde o casamento se realizou no dia seguinte. Uma vez que o Martin e o Adam são os melhores amigos do noivo, este escolheu passar a sua última noite de solteiro connosco. A casa onde ficámos é um sonho: tem uma piscina infinita, dois dos quartos ficam numa casa na árvore e tem uma área comum com portas de correr que permitem uma vista desafogada para o infinito do oceano Pacífico. O casamento em si foi muito especial e intimista. O momento em que o Brad viu o amor da sua vida caminhar até ao seu encontro ao som da banda sonora do filme Love Actually foi especialmente emotivo, até o Martin e o Adam quebraram nesse instante.
The wedding itself was both unpretentious and also completely bonkers! Brad has a very particular sense of humor and certain details throughout the ceremony reflected that. He walked down the aisle to the sound of Lion King's iconic song Circle of Life. Waiting for the guests were two lamas who, needless to say, got more attention than the groom himself. And, on the day after the wedding, even though most of the guests were hanging big time, we went to a beach yoga class which ended up being hilarious since there was a huge sandstorm on that day and our motor abilities were, let's say, very limited.
O casamento em si foi simultaneamente despretensioso e também completamente de doidos! O Brad tem um sentido de humor muito caricato e certos apontamentos ao longo da cerimónia reflectiram isso mesmo. A sua chegada por exemplo foi feita ao som da banda sonora do Rei Leão. À espera dos convidados estavam dois lamas que, escusado será dizer, quase que receberam mais atenção do que o noivo. E, no dia seguinte, ainda que a maioria estivesse com uma ressaca gigante, ainda houve uma aula de yoga na praia o que, graças a uma tempestade de areia enorme e à nossa limitada capacidade motora depois de um festão daqueles, foi de chorar a rir .
The rest of the trip was spent in Sydney, some of it in Bodi Beach and the rest in Surrey Hills. Both I and Martin had already been to Sydney so this trip was all about spending time with our friends, eating well and basically live more like a local rather than a tourist. The best of Sydney is its restaurants and cafés, we always ate amazingly well in all of them. On top of the delicious food, in most restaurants, I noticed a very awake consciousness when it came to health and environmental issues. That being said here's a list of all the restaurants and places we went to:
Restaurants:
Cuckoo Callay on Crown - Australians do brunch very well, so a lot of my recommendations will be around that. In this place, the bacon and egg bun is very yummy.
The Dolphin - It's an Italian restaurant with a very good vibe, ideal for drinks and dinners with friends.
Drake Eatery - Although we've visited this restaurant in the morning, it's also an excellent choice for any other time of the day. I like to try different flavours, so in order to get away from the more obvious brunch options, at this place I ordered the following dish: Flor Di Latte Mozzarella, Grape Tomato, Peach, Almonds and Lemon Myrtle Oil. Delicious!
Cali Press Bondi Beach - I ate a lot of Acaí here and the coffee was delicious too.
Brewtown - The best coffee I drank in Sydney! Try the macadamia milk latte, it's super creamy and delicious. I can’t wait for this alternative to cow's milk to be more popular in Europe.
Bills - Again, great for brunch, especially when it comes to pancakes. In addition, it has a very cool decoration.
A Tavola - This was definitely my favourite restaurant. It has only one table, it's very cosy and serves the best homemade beef ragu pasta I've ever had.
Tokyo Sydney - The only fancy restaurant we went to. A little more ostentatious but fun, ideal for dinners. We opted for the tasting menu which was magical.
O resto da viagem foi passado em Sydney, parte na zona de Bodi Beach e o restante em Surrey Hills. Tanto eu como o Martin já tínhamos ido a Sydney portanto esta viagem serviu para matar saudades dos nossos amigos, comer bem e fazer vida de local do que propriamente ser turista. O melhor de Sydney é mesmo a gastronomia, os restaurantes são incríveis, não tivemos nenhuma má experiência e em todos eles notei que há uma grande preocupação com a saúde e com questões do meio ambiente. Cuckoo Callay on Crown – os Australianos são óptimos a fazer brunch, por isso muitas das minhas recomendações vão ser à volta disso. Neste sítio o bun de bacon e ovo é maravilhoso.
The Dolphin – É um restaurante italiano com muito boa vibe, ideal para um copo e jantares com amigos.
Drake Eatery – Ainda que tenhamos visitado este restaurante de manhã, é uma excelente opção para qualquer refeição. Eu gosto de experimentar diferentes sabores, assim sendo, para fugir as opções mais óbvias de brunch, neste sítio pedi o seguinte: Flor Di Latte Mozzarella, tomate de uva, pêssego, amêndoas e óleo de Myrtle de limão. Delicioso!
Cali Press Bondi Beach – Comi muitos açaís aqui e o café também era delicioso.
Brewtown – O melhor café que bebi em Sydney! Experimentem o latte com leite de macadamia, é super cremoso e delicioso. Mal posso esperar para que essa alternativa ao leite de vaca seja mais popular na Europa.
Bills – Mais uma vez óptimo para brunch, especialmente no que toca a panquecas. Para além disso tem uma decoração muito cool.
A Tavola – Este foi defenitivamente o meu restaurante preferido. Tem apenas uma mesa, é bastante acolhedor e serve a melhor massa de bife ragu caseira que alguma vez tive a oportunidade de provar.
Tokyo Sydney – O único restaurante assim mais fancy a que fomos. É o oposto do Tavola, um bocadinho ostentoso mas com uma vibe divertida, ideal para jantares. Nós optámos pelo menu de desgustação que é maravilhoso.
What to visit:
. Go to Palm Beach, an hour away from Sydney, where the scenery is breathtaking. If you have the opportunity to go there I recommend you have dinner at the Boathouse and breakfast at the sister restaurant Whale Beach Deli.
. Go to the Blue Mountains, something we did not get to do because on the day we had planned to go happened the biggest storm of the last 40 years. But according to my friends who live there, it is worth a visit.
. Visit the Opera House at the end of the day and see the spectacle that is watching the sunset behind Sydney Harbor Bridge. To accompany this moment order potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce, which is a typical Australian snack, in the outdoors bar of the Opera House. Watch out for the seagulls that are always ready to steal a potato.
. Visit Bondi Beach and do the walk to Coogee. It's a long walk but worth it for the beautiful scenery that goes with it. Once you get to Coogee have a drink at the Pavillion while you watch another sunset.
. Visit Bondi Icebergs Club and maybe swim in the Olympic pool that borders the sea.
. Walk the streets of Surry Hills and Bondi Beach and visit its various shops. Some of the ones I liked: Somedays; LoveStories; Collector Store and Jac + Jack.
. Visit The Grounds market which offers plenty of street food options, handicrafts and many instagramable corners.
. Take the ferry to Manly and walk to Shelly beach. The ferry ride provides incredible views of Sydney.
. Lastly, I recommend visiting the Sydney Zoo where adults and children are invited to learn more about the planet and also to see, in my opinion, the most beautiful view of Sydney.
O que visitar:
. Ir a Palm Beach que fica a uma hora de Sydney onde o cenário é de cortar a respiração. Se tiverem a oportunidade de lá ir recomendo-vos que jantem no Boathouse e que tomem o pequeno-almoço no restaurante irmão Whale Beach Deli.
. Ir às montanhas azuis, coisa que nós não chegámos a fazer porque no dia em que tínhamos planeado ir chegou a Sydney maior tempestade dos últimos 40 anos. Mas segundo os meus amigos que lá vivem vale mesmo a pena visitar.
. Visitar a Opera House ao final do dia e ver o espectáculo que é ver o sol pôr-se por detrás da Sydney Harbour Bridge. Para acompanhar este momento peçam uma dose de batatas fritas com sour cream e sweet chilli sauce, que é um snack típico australiano, no bar exterior da Opera House. Cuidado com as gaivotas que estão sempre à caça de um turista desprevenido para roubar uma batatinha.
. Visitar Bondi Beach e fazer a caminhada que vaia té Coogee. É uma caminhada longa mas que vale a pena pela bonita paisagem que a acompanha. Uma vez chegando a Coogee bebe um copo no Pavillion enquanto vês mais um pôr-do-sol.
. Caminhar nas ruas de Surry Hills e Bondi Beach e visitar as suas várias lojas. Algumas das que gostei: Somedays; LoveStories; Collector Store e Jac+Jack.
. Visitar o Bondi Icebergs Club e quiçá nadar na piscina olímpica que faz fronteira com o mar.
. Visitar o mercado The Grounds que tem muita oferta de street food, artesanato e recantos muitos instragramáveis.
. Apanhar o ferry até Manly e caminhar até Shelly beach. O passeio de ferry proporciona vistas incríveis da cidade de Sydney.
. Por fim eu recomendo visitar o Zoo de Sydney, onde adultos e crianças são convidados a aprender mais sobre o planeta e também a ver, na minha opinião, a vista mais bonita de Sydney.
When traveling, there’s nothing better than to have friends living in the place you're visiting. Being in the company of someone who knows all the ins and outs of the city is the best way to really get to know its essence. In fairness, the best Sydney has to offer is its relaxed lifestyle. Many times I found myself admiring fearless surfers who, after work, found their peace in the heavy sea. There, in the vastness of the Pacific, they were finally free and I, for one, was happy to be their spectator.
Não há melhor do que viajar para um local onde temos amigos. Estar na companhia de alguém que conhece os cantos à cidade é a melhor forma de ficar realmente a conhecer a sua essência. Até porque o melhor que Sydney tem para oferecer é mesmo o seu lifestyle. Várias foram as vezes que dei por mim a admirar os destemidos surfistas que depois do trabalho vinham encontrar a sua paz na força do mar. Eles finalmente livres na imensidão do Pacífico, e eu feliz por ser a sua espectadora. Até uma próxima Sydney.
