are selfies art?
Com a primavera chegam os dias longos portanto, numa destas tardes, optei por ir a uma das minhas galerias preferidas ver a exposição do momento: Selfie to Self-Expression. Esta diz-se ser a primeira exposição que retrata a história da selfie.
Aposto que estás neste momento a questionar-te se uma colecção de selfies merece ser considerada uma obra de arte, confesso que também tinha as minhas dúvidas. Em Selfie to Self-Expression o fenómeno da selfie é retratado de uma forma tão profunda que derruba qualquer ideia preconcebida que tenhamos de que este é meramente um acto de egocentrismo. Na primeira sala da exposição estão expostas versões digitais de autorretratos icónicos como os de Frida Kahlo e Van Gogh. Ao lado de cada ecrã há um smartphone que nos permitir pôr um like na obra através de um mero double click e, tal como no Instagram, no canto inferior esquerdo vêm-se os likes a crescer. Nigel Hurst, chefe executivo da galeria, diz que a ideia não é para ser levada muito a sério, é apenas uma oportunidade que se dá aos elementos do público de decidir se, por exemplo, Rembrandt não é muito a sua praia mas Picasso sim. Por outro lado é caricato pensar que os artistas ali expostos criaram a sua arte num períodos livre desta pressão exercida pelas redes sociais, sem a preocupação de agradar a gregos e a troinanos e sem a influência negativa dos comentários de cyber bullies. Talvez a instalação que me tenha sensibilizado mais foi a de Rafael Lozano-hemmer. Quando me aproximei vi o meu reflexo num ecrã e, como que por magia, os meus olhos foram substituidos por um fumo branco. Fiquei tão hipnotizada pela dança daquelas labaredas virtuais que só minutos depois é que reparei que os meus olhos estavam no fundo do ecrã alinhados com a com uma colecção imensa de outros olhares que ali tinham estado antes de mim.
Selfie to Self-Expression desvenda-nos diversas dimensões do fenómeno da selfie e prova-nos que o autorretrato é muito mais do que um acto de narcisismo, mas sim uma janela para a intimidade, um desabafo, um segredo, uma metáfora para o que nos vai cá dentro... Todos os dias se tiram mais de um milhão de selfies, documentando-se a assim a vida e a alma humana como nunca antes.
A exposição é de entrada gratuita e está em exibição até dia 30 de Maio.
With Spring come the long days so, on one of these early evenings, I decided to go to one of my favourite galleries to see the exhibition of the moment called Selfie to Self-Expression. This is said to be the first exhibition that portrays the history of 'the selfie'.
I bet you're now wondering if a collection of selfies deserves to be considered a work of art, I confess I also had my doubts. In Selfie to Self-Expression the phenomenon of the selfie is portrayed in such a profound way that it overturns any preconceived idea that we might have that it is merely an act of egocentrism.
In the first room of the exhibition there is a collection of digital versions of self portraits made by iconic artists like Frida Kahlo and Van Gogh. Beside each screen there is a smartphone allowing us to like the piece and, just like on Instagram, in the lower left corner we see the likes growing. Nigel Hurst, chief executive of the gallery, says the idea is not to be taken very seriously, it's just an opportunity given to the public in where one can decide, for example, that Rembrandt is not their cup of tea, but Picasso is. On the other hand it is odd to think that those artists created these pieces of art in a period of time free of the kind of social media pressure we experience now, without the concern of pleasing everyone and without the negative influence cyber bullies.
Perhaps the installation that moved me the most was the one made by Rafael Lozano-hemmer. As I approached I saw my reflection on a screen and, as if by magic, my eyes were replaced by white smoke. I was so hypnotized by the dance of those virtual flames that only minutes later I noticed that my eyes were at the bottom of the screen aligned with a huge collection of other eyes that had been there before me.
Selfie to Self-Expression reveals several dimensions of the selfie phenomenon and proves to us that self-portraits are much more than an act of narcissism, but rather a window into intimacy, an outburst, a secret, a metaphor for what is going on inside us...More than a million selfies are taken every day, documenting our lives and souls as never before.
This exhibition is free and open until the 30th of May.

Claro que tirámos umas selfies para capturar a felicidade que ambas sentimos em estarmos juntas de novo!
Joana used to live in London but is now based in LA. There is nothing more nostalgic than revisiting our favourite places of the city and remember those initial memories of when we moved here to chase our dreams. Of course we had to take some selfies to capture the happiness of being together again!
