Kenwood House
Although the cost of living in London is one of the highest in the world, most museums are free admission. The fact that there is always some event going on and so much to discover is what makes this city so special. There is not a single Londoner who doesn't complain about the bad weather, the exorbitant prices of rents, the traffic, the pollution, well, about countless things.... The truth is that wherever we are we will always have to compromise and give up some things in order to benefit from others. Maybe I don't benefit from a great quality of life here, but I still agree with the iconic Samuel Johnson who said, "Anyone who is tired of London is tired of life." Don't get me wrong, I also often complain, but then I have a day like this and suddenly I remember how fortunate am I to live in a city where one stumbles on culture and art every two steps.
Ainda que em Londres o custo de vida seja um dos mais elevados no mundo, a maior parte dos museus são de entrada gratuita. O facto de haver sempre algum a evento a decorrer e tanta coisa para descobrir é o que torna esta cidade tão especial. Não há um Londrino que não se queixe do mau tempo, dos preços exorbitantes das rendas, do tráfego, da poluição, enfim, de um sem número de coisas... A verdade é que estejamos onde estivermos teremos sempre de abdicar de algumas coisas para poder beneficiar de outras. Talvez aqui não se usufrua da melhor qualidade de vida mas ainda assim eu continuo a concordar com o emblemático Samuel Johnson que dizia: “Quem está cansado de Londres, está casado da vida”. Também dou por mim muitas vezes a queixar-me, mas depois tenho um dia como este e volto a lembrar-me de que sou uma afortunada por viver numa cidade onde se tropeça em cultura e arte a cada dois passos.
This time I went to explore Hampstead, one of my favorite areas of London. I remember when Martin brought me here for the first time, I was completely blown away by the magnificence and the beauty of the buildings in Hampstead, this is the highest part of London, both in height and refinement. The only McDonalds in the area closed in 2013 and no one ever complained about it. This is one of the neighbourhoods of London where the local commerce still subsists. Butchers, bookstores, grocery stores, dairies are family businesses that pass from generation to generation. In the midst of one of the largest capitals in the world, here we still feel that we are in a small village. Hampstead is also known for its huge park also known as Hampstead Heath. From there it's possible to see the city in the background, solid and compact. Large trees stifle urban noise and house more than 180 different bird species. In addition to the immense vegetation the Heat also has lakes, a zoo and several sport areas. But for me, Kenwood House is what sets this green space apart from others. Kenwood is a property that dates back to the 18th century, was bought and left to the nation by Lord Iveagh (patriarch of the Guiness family) who before passing away made sure that the house would stay for eternity open to the public for free. Kenwood is worth visiting not only for the amazing architecture of the building but also for the extensive collection of art donated by its owner, which includes works by renowned artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. During the summer the grounds of the estate are used as stage for Opera concerts.
Desta vez fui explorar Hampstead, uma das minhas zonas preferidas de Londres. Lembro-me que, quando o Martin me trouxe aqui pela primeira vez, fiquei completamente boquiaberta tal é a magnificência e o primor dos edifícios presentes em Hampstead, esta é a zona mais elevada de londres, tanto em altitude como em requinte. O único McDonalds da zona fechou em 2013 e nunca ninguém se queixou de tal facto. Esta é um dos poucos bairros de Londres onde o comércio local ainda subsiste. Os talhos, livrarias, mercearias, queijarias são negócios de família que passam de geração em geração. No meio de uma das maiores capitais do mundo, aqui ainda se sente que estamos numa pequena vila. Hampstead é também conhecido pelo seu enorme parque. Lá do alto é possível ver a cidade ao fundo, sólida e compacta. As árvores de grande porte abafam o ruído urbano e abrigam mais de 180 diferentes espécies de pássaros. Para além da imensa vegetação o parque tem ainda lagos, um zoo e várias zonas de desporto. Mas, para mim, Kenwood House é o que distingue este parque dos outros. Kenwood é uma propriedade que remete para o século XVII, foi comprada e deixada à nação pelo Lord Iveagh (patriarca da família Guiness) que antes de falecer se certificou de que a casa ficaria para a eternidade aberta ao público gratuitamente. Vale a pena visitar Kenwood não só pela incrível arquitectura do edifício mas também pela extensa colecção de arte doada pelo mesmo da qual fazem parte obras de artistas de renome como Rembrandt e Vermeer. Durante o verão os jardins da propriedade são utilizados como palco de concertos de Ópera.

I have a certain fascination for these types of buildings not only because of their obvious grandeur, but also because they are, after all, somewhat mysterious. In places like this I find myself fantasizing about what has happened between these walls that remain intact as time renews generations. How many dances has this floor known? How many songs did this piano play? How many guests slept in this room? The questions do not cease while I explore the monument... In the rooms now practically stripped of furniture I can almost imagine the banquets and feasts as if they were taking place right in front of me. I come back often because, although this is all my imagination, here princesses are real...
Eu tenho um certo fascínio por este tipo de edifícios não só pela sua evidente grandiosidade, mas também porque são, ao fim ao cabo, um tanto misteriosos. Dou por mim a fantasiar sobre o que se terá passado entre estas paredes que se mantêm hirtas enquanto o tempo renova gerações. Quantos bailes conhece este chão? Quantas obras tocou este piano? Quantos hóspedes recebeu este quarto? As questões não cessam enquanto exploro o monumento...Nas salas agora praticamente despidas de mobília quase que consigo figurar os banquetes e festas de outrora como se estivessem a decorrer ali mesmo à minha frente. Volto com frequência porque, ainda que seja tudo fruto da minha imaginação, aqui as princesas existem...
