London City Guide
Vezes sem conta amigos, seguidores (ughr odeio esta palavra) e leitores pediram que criasse um guia sobre a cidade de Londres. Fui atrasando este guia porque não sabia por onde começar. Londres é uma cidade enorme, e, na minha opinião, diferentes zonas têm diferentes vibes. O centro, apesar de lindo, é um constante vai e vem de pessoas do mundo inteiro que, apesar de fascinante, também é, na minha opinião, cansativo enquanto residente, já para não falar do quão é ridiculamente caro é viver na zona 1 (bem, é ridiculamente caro viver em Londres ponto final). Guias turísticos sobre o que visitar há aos pontapés na internet, portanto o que eu decidi fazer é uma lista das coisas que eu gosto de fazer e que, espero eu, contém recomendações menos óbvias. Para se localizarem melhor e para vos ajudar na organização da viagem este guia está organizado por zonas.
Como vos disse Londres é tão grande que cada zona tem a sua vibe, enquanto que no oeste e no centro se localizam os bairros mais elegantes ou, como se diz aqui, “posh”, na zona este encontram-se as zonas mais artísticas e boémias das cidade. Assim sendo vale a pena visitar diferentes áreas para que deste modo se usufrua da diversidade de coisas que Londres tem para oferecer.
Over and over again friends, followers (ughr I hate that word) and readers planing to visit London have asked me for recommendations, so I've decided to, finally, create a city guide. I took so long creating this guide purely because I didn't know where to start. London is a huge city, and in my opinion, different areas have different vibes. The center of the city, although beautiful, has so many people running around from one place to another from all over the world that, while fascinating, is also, in my opinion, tiresome as a resident, not to mention how ridiculously expensive is to live in zone 1 (well, it is ridiculously expensive to live in London, period). There are plenty of tour guides online, so what I've decided to do is more a list of things I like to do which hopefully contains some less obvious recommendations. To make it easier for you, and to help you organize your visit, I have structured this guide by zones.
As I mentioned earlier, London is so big that every area has its own vibe. While in west London you find elegant neighbourhoods or, as they say here, "posh", east is where the more artistic and bohemian boroughs are. Nevertheless is worth visiting several diferente areas to really get a feel of what this amazing city has to offer.
West London
(Notting Hill; South Kensington; Sloane square; Knighstbridge; Chelsea; Richmond; Kew)
Visitar o mercado de Portobello ao sábado, é bastante turístico mas divertido.
Passear pelo bairro de Notting hill e admirar as famosas fachadas coloridas do mesmo.
Visitar a rua Westbourne Grove, uma das minhas ruas preferidas em Londres, onde encontrarás lojas e cafés muito pitorescos.
Caminhar de Notting Hill até Holland Park para visitar o Kyoto Gardens e o Museu do Design.
Visitar os seguintes museus: Victoria & Albert Museum; Museu de História Nacional; Museu da ciência; Saatchi gallery.
Se gostas de livros visita a Livraria John Sandoe Books.
Passear pela King's road que tem várias lojas, e divagar pelas ruas laterais para espreitar as fachadas imaculadas do bairro de Chelsea.
Ir ver um concerto no Royal Albert Hall, definitivamente a sala de espectáculos mais bonita de Londres.
Ir ver uma peça de teatro no Royal Court Theatre onde os bilhetes de pé custam apenas dez cêntimos ou onde à segunda feira todos os bilhetes são apenas dez libras.
Passear por Hyde park, visitar a galeria Serpentine, e, num dia bonito, beber um Pimm's numa das esplanadas em redor do lago.
Visitar o Palácio de Fulham, um dos palácios que mais passa despercebido. Se queres evitar as enchentes do centro de Londres mas gostas de visitar monumentos então certamente irás gostar de o visitar.
Visitar os jardins de Kew que são um bocadinho longe do centro mas que pela sua imensidão e beleza merecem uma visita.
Visit Portobello market on a Saturday which is a very touristy thing to do but fun.
Simply stroll around Notting Hill in any day of the week and admire its famous colourful houses.
Visit Westbourne Grove, one of my favorite streets in London, where you will find lots of nice shops and cafés.
Walk from Notting Hill to Holland Park and visit the Kyoto Gardens and the Design Museum.
Visit the following museums: Victoria & Albert Museum; National History Museum; Science Museum and the Saatchi gallery.
If you like books visit John Sandoe Books.
Walk around King's road which has several shops, and wander down the side streets to peer into the pristine and immaculate neighbourhood of Chelsea.
If you can, watch a show or a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, definitely the most beautiful venue of London.
Watch a play at the Royal Court Theatre where on Monday all tickets cost only ten pounds. Also everyday standing tickets are available for only 10p.
Explore Hyde park, visit the Serpentine gallery, and, on a sunny day, order a Pimm's on one of the bars around the lake.
Visit the Fulham Palace, one of the most underrated attractions in London. If you want to avoid the crowds of central London but you enjoy visiting monuments then you will certainly enjoy this place.
Visit Kew Gardens which is a little far from the center but definitely worth a visit.

Assistir a um espectáculo de ballet na Royal Opera House, uma das salas mais emblemáticas de Londres;
Ir ao teatro ou assistir a um musical. Faz o download da app Today Tix onde encontrarás a melhor oferta de bilhetes;
Visitar Little Venice para um passeio de barco ou simplesmente para caminhar ao longo do canal e visitar os cafézinhos e lojas do percurso que te levará até Camden Town. Em Little Venice há um restaurant incrível dentro de um barco que se chama London Shell Co;
Visitar as livrarias Daunt books e Foyles;
Passear pelo bairro de Marylebone, um dos meus bairros favoritos;
Visita a Somerset House que não só tem restaurantes e exposições magníficas mas também uma pista de gelo durante o inverno e um cinema ao ar livre durante o verão;
Visitar o espaço 180 The Strand que por norma tem exposições muito interessantes como esta que visitei recentemente;
Para quem gosta de moda o Dover Street Market e o Liberty são, para mim, as lojas com mais personalidade e com maior oferta de peças únicas;
Tomar o chá das cinco. O melhor é definitivamente o do Claridges que há mais de 150 anos serve o chá das cinco e, como tal, é muito concorrido, portanto é necessário reservar com alguma antecedência. Para opções mais baratas há sempre imensos "deals" disponíveis no Groupon, no entanto a maior parte dos hotéis no centro de Londres serve um excelente chá das cinco. Recomendo também o Sanderson Hotel cujo chá é baseado no filme Alice no País das Maravilhas.
Explorar a cultura das coffee shops que para além de cafés são também local de trabalho para muitos londrinos, é comum encontrar pessoas a escrever, compôr música, ou até mesmo a ter reuniões nestes espaços públicos. Watch a ballet at the Royal Opera House, one of London's most iconic venues;
Go to the theatre or watch a musical. Download the app Today Tix and find the best ticket deals;
Visit Little Venice for a boat trip or simply for a walk along the canal which takes you to Camden Town and where you'll find a lot of quirky cafés and shops . In Little Venice there is an incredible restaurant inside a boat called London Shell Co;
Visit the bookstores Daunt books and Foyles.
Stroll through Marylebone, one of my favorite neighbourhoods.
Visit the Somerset House which not only has superb restaurants and exhibitions but also an ice rink during the Winter and an open air cinema during the Summer.
Visit 180 The Strand which is a space where you can usually find really interesting exhibitions like this one I visited recently.
For those who like fashion, Dover Street Market and Liberty are, for me, the coolest (and also more expensive) shops in London, even if these shops sell items way above your budget, I find that visiting them is always fun and inspiring, both present a selection of the most unique and exclusive items in current fashion.
Be British and go for an afternoon tea. The best one is definitely the one from Claridges which has been serving afternoon tea for the last 150 years and, as such, it is always very busy so you must book well in advance. For cheaper options there are always lots of deals available on Groupon, however most hotels in central London serve an excellent afternoon tea. For a less traditional one try Alice in Wonderland's tea party served by the Sanderson Hotel.
Explore coffee shops, which besides serving coffee and cake are also a place of work for many Londoners, in them you'll find people writing, composing music, or even having meetings. It's really interesting actually, you get to meet people and feel like a real Londoner. Download the The London Coffee Guide app to find the best coffee shops.

SOUTH LONDON
(Southbank; London Bridge; Waterloo; Greenwich)
Apanhar o barco na doca de Tower of London e seguir até Greenwich, é um programa que passa despercebido a muitos turistas por parecer de algum modo longe mas é um passeio muito agradável.
Em Greenwich visitar o observatório de onde se tem uma vista privilegiada da cidade;
Passear por Greenwich Park e pelo museu que é muitas vezes ignorado pelas massas vá-se lá saber porquê.
Mais perto do centro da cidade é interessante fazer o passeio desde o London Eye até London Bridge onde fica o Borough Market onde é possível encontrar uma série de bancas que vendem a mais deliciosa street food. Durante esse percurso será possível ver vários edifícios emblemáticos tais como como o Teatro Nacional, o British Film Institute e o famoso museu Tate Modern.
Visitar o Sky Garden e o The Shard para apreciar as vistas mais bonitas da cidade.
Catch the boat by the Tower of London and head to Greenwich which is something tourists don't often do, maybe because it seems like a long journey, but in fact it is a really nice thing to do and a much better way to travel in London.
In Greenwich visit the Observatory where you'll find a privileged view of the city;
Strolling around Greenwich Park and the museum that is also often ignored by the masses.
Visit the Greenwich market for some tasty street food.
Closer to the city center it's interesting to walk from the London Eye to London Bridge where the Borough Market is, in there you will find a number of stalls where you can eat the most delicious street food of London. During this walk you'll pass by lots of emblematic buildings such as the National Theater, the British Film Institute and the famous Tate Modern museum.
Visit the Sky Garden and The Shard to enjoy the most beautiful views of the city.

Visitar a Dennis Server's House, uma casa que se apresenta tal e qual como se ainda estivéssemos no século XVII, uma experiência imersiva que nos leva numa viagem pelo o tempo.
Visitar o mercado de Spitalfields (Brick Lane) ao domingo onde é possível encontrar muitas lojas vintage, artesanato, artistas de rua e street food;
Visitar o mercado das flores em Columbia Road e tomar um brunch num dos muitos cafés hipsters da zona;
Ir ao Electric Cinema para ver um filme ou almoçar, o restaurante do cinema é muito bom e tem um ambiente muito acolhedor;
Passear pelas ruas de Shoreditch e Brick Lane para contemplar a arte urbana nelas presente e visitar lojas alternativas de decoração e roupa;
Se procuras um sítio para trabalhar com o teu computador, eu custumo ir para o Ace Hotel, há muita gente de diferentes áreas a trabalhar por lá e tem um ambiente muito interessante.
No verão fazer um barbecue em London Fields;
Participar numa experiência gastronómica imersiva e cuja localização só é desvendada no próprio dia. Este evento chama-se Chamber of Flavours, vê mais aqui. Os bilhetes esgotam em pouco tempo e o evento só se concretiza esporadicamente portanto fica atento(a) ao website do mesmo.
Assitir a um concerto no XOYO.
Comer um beigel no Brick Lane Beigel Bake.
Visitar o Barbican, um marco arquitectónico da cidade, palco para incríveis espectáculos e exposições.
Visitar a livraria Liberia;
Visitar o Broadway Market.
Visit the Dennis Server's House, a house that presents itself as if we were still in the seventeenth century, an immersive experience that takes us on a journey through time.
Visit the Spitalfields market (Brick Lane) on Sunday where you can find many vintage shops, crafts, street performers and street food;
Visit the flower market on Columbia Road and have a brunch at one of the many hipsters cafes;
Go to the Electric Cinema to see a movie or to have lunch, the cinema´s restaurant is very good and has a very cosy atmosphere;
Stroll the streets of Shoreditch and Brick Lane to contemplate the urban art in them and visit its quirky clothing and decor stores;
If you are looking for a place to work with your laptop, I usually go to the Ace Hotel, many people from different areas work in there and it has a very interesting environment.
In the summer have a non-touristic barbecue in London Fields;
Participate in an immersive gastronomic experience in which the location is only unveiled on the same day. This event is called Chamber of Flavors, see more here. Tickets sell out very quickly and the event only happens sporadically so keep an eye on their website.
Watch a show at XOYO.
Eat a beigel at the Brick Lane Beigel Bake.
Visit the Barbican, an architectural landmark of the city, stage for incredible shows and exhibitions.
Visit the Liberia Bookstore;
Visit Broadway Market.
North London
(Islington; Angel; Primrose Hill; Highgate; Hampstead)

No verão nadar nos lagos de Hampstead Heath, explorar o parque e visitar a Kentwood House, espreita o blog post que fiz há uns tempos sobre esta atração.
Admirar a cidade do cimo de Primrose Hill e, ao domingo, comer um típico Sunday Roast no pub The Engineer;
Ir visitar a British Library;
No verão ir ver uma peça de teatro no Regent's Park Open Air Theatre;
Ir ver a plataforma 9¾ dos filmes do Harry Potter em King's Cross;
Watch a concert at the Union Chapel;
In the Summer swim in the Hampstead Heath's ponds, explore the park and visit Kentwood House, check out the blog post I did a while back about this attraction.
Admire the town from the top of Primrose Hill and, on Sunday, go for a Sunday Roast at The Engineer pub;
Go visit the British Library;
In the summer go watch a play at the Regent's Park Open Air Theater;
Go see Harry Potter's 9¾ platform at King's Cross;
General tips
Onde ficar:
Como tudo em Londres, os hotéis são geralmente caros e não muito grandes. Eu prefiro hotéis boutique que transmitam a ideia de conformo ao invés das grandes cadeias. Aqui fica um lista dos meus preferidos:
Se não quiseres gastar muito dinheiro em alojamento, se pretendes simplesmente um sitio limpo e confortável para dormir nesse caso recomendo-te que procures um Airbnb. Qualquer zona serve desde que o Airbnb seja perto de uma estação de metro, o sistema de transportes em Londres é muito bom e seguro.
Where to stay:
Like everything in London, hotels are generally expensive and the rooms are usually quite small. Whenever I travel I always prefer boutique hotels with a lot of personality instead of the big chain ones. Here is a list of my favourite ones:
If you don't want to spend much on accommodation, if you are simply looking for a clean and comfortable place to sleep then I recommend you look for an Airbnb in any location really as long as it is close to a tube station, the transport system in London is very good and safe.
Airports:
Londres tem 6 aeroportos (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City airport e London Southend airport). Conta com pelo menos uma hora de caminho para chegares a qualquer um deles.
Ligações entre o aeroporto e a cidade:
Heathrow – Metro, Picadilly line, ou Heathrow express até à estação Paddington.
Gatwick – Gatwick express até à estação de Victoria.
Stansted – Stansted express até à estação de Liverpool Street.
Luton – Comboio até à estação de King's Cross.
City Airport – DLR até à estação de Bank (uma espécie de metro à superfície).
London Southend airport – Comboio até Liverpool Street Station.
Fazer esses mesmos percurso de autocarro será muito mais económico mas como o trânsito é imprevisível eu não recomendo essa opção.
London has 6 airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City airport and London Southend airport). Allow at least an hour to get to any of them.
Links between the airport and the city:
Heathrow - Tube, Piccadilly line, or Heathrow express to Paddington station.
Gatwick - Gatwick express to Victoria station.
Stansted - Stansted express to Liverpool Street station.
Luton - Train to King's Cross station.
City Airport - DLR to Bank Station.
London Southend airport - Train to Liverpool Street Station.
These routes will be much cheaper by bus but, as the traffic is unpredictable, I would not recommend it.
Transport:
Aconselho-te a fazer o download da app City mapper que na minha opinião funciona melhor do que o Google maps. Ao inserires o nome do local para onde pretendes ir e a app apresentará uma série de percursos e o preço equivalente a cada um deles.
Em vez de comprares um Oyster card (um género de passe) aconselho que utilizes o teu cartão de débito ou crédito caso seja wireless. Ou poderás também utilizar o Apple Pay se tiveres um Iphone. Tanto com o cartão ou telefone basta tocar no respectivo sensor colocado nas barreiras do metro para que as portas se abram. Este sistema é muito mais económico e inteligente do que o Oyster pois calcula os percursos feitos durante o dia cobrando o valor mais baixo possível.
I advise you to download an app called City mapper, which in my opinion works better than Google maps. Just enter the name of the place where you want to go and the app will present a series of routes and the price equivalent to each one of them.
Instead of buying an Oyster card I advise you to use your debit or credit contactless card if you have one. Alternatively you can also use Apple Pay if you have an Iphone. With either your card or phone just touch the respective sensor placed in the barriers in the tube to open the doors. This system is much smarter and more economical than the Oyster card, simply because it calculates the routes made during the day charging the lowest possible value.
When to visit London:
Em qualquer altura do ano! Apesar de durante o Inverno os dias serem bem mais curtos e de estar mais frio o Natal é, para mim, a época mais bonita em Londres. Durante o verão o dias são muito longos, o sol só se põe pelas 22h e, se tiveres sorte, e apanhares boas temperaturas verás os parques a encherem tanto como os areais da Caparica!
Any time of the year! Although during the Winter the days are much shorter and colder Christmas is, for me, the most beautiful time of the year in London. During the Summer you get much longer days, the sun sets only at 10pm and, if you are lucky, you'll get good temperatures and see the parks filling up and the Brits wearing shorts!
Currency Exchange:
Vou vos revelar o meu mais precioso segredo: o Revolut! Nunca mais troquei dinheiro desde que descobri este cartão. Como devem calcular as casas de câmbio geram o seu lucro através das comissões e, portanto, acabamos por perder muito dinheiro dessa mesma forma. O Revolut é um cartão gratuito pré pago. Através de uma app transferes o teu dinheiro para o Revolut de acordo com a taxa de conversão do dia presente no google sem que te seja cobrado qualquer comissão. Para além disso quando o utilizas não te cobram taxas como acontece com os cartões de banco normais. Para além disso a app mostra-te em tempo real o teu extracto para que consigas controlar os teus gastos. Vê mais aqui. Quero só realçar que este “shout out” não está a ser pago pela marca, estou só a partilhar uma dica que mudou completamente a forma como viajo.
I am about to reveal the most useful tip of this guide: the Revolut card! Since I discovered this card I stoped exchanging cash. As you can imagine currency exchange shops generate their profit through commissions therefore, we end up losing a lot of money by exchanging it. Revolut is a free prepaid card. Through an app you transfer your money into your Revolut card according to the present conversion rate on Google without being charged any commission. In addition, when you use it, you won't be charged a fee like the normal bank cards do. Also, the app shows you a statement in real time which allows you to better control your expenses.
