My Kitchen
For the Portuguese, the kitchen will always be the heart of the house. Whether simple or sophisticated it is, around the table, without noticing the passing of time and in the company of a bottle of wine that empties way too quickly, that love, struggles and dreams are shared. In our home, when we are too many (I miss that) even the kitchen worktops or the floor turn into a seating area. I long to host people, to drum my fingers impatiently while the kettle boils for tea, to improvise recipes, set up the table and shout, happily, to those who in the meantime have scattered through the arteries of the house, "table, dinner is ready!".
Para um português a cozinha será sempre o coração da casa. Seja ela simples ou sofisticada é, em redor da mesa, sem olhar o relógio e na companhia de uma garrafa de vinho que se esvazia rápido de mais, que se debate, sonha e ama. Cá em casa, quando somos muitos, ai como eu tenho saudades de sermos muitos, até da bancada fazemos assento. Anseio voltar a receber amigos e família, a tamborilar os dedos impaciente enquanto a chaleira ferve, a improvisar receitas, pôr a mesa e gritar, feliz, para os que entretanto se espalharam pelas artérias da casa, “mesa, o jantar está pronto!”.
I really like our kitchen. I love the mixture of the brick textures, with the solid wood flooring and the bare ceiling revealing the upstairs floor (it doesn't isolate the noise very well, but looks lovely). This space is a great representation of who we are, for the most attentive readers some Portuguese details won't go unnoticed, like the clay jar, cataplana pot and patterned tiles. However, there is also a lot of English heritage, such as the wooden cabinet that has once belonged to a pub, the Dualit appliances and its general farm house vibes.
Eu gosto muito da nossa cozinha. Agrada-me a mistura das texturas do tijolo, com o parquet de madeira e o teto descoberto revelando o chão do andar de cima (não isola muito bem o barulho, mas fica bonito). Este espaço representa-nos maravilhosamente, para os mais atentos não vão passar despercebidos alguns apontamentos portugueses, como jarros de barro, a cataplana e os azulejos. No entanto também há neste espaço muita herança inglesa como o armário de madeira que em tempos pertenceu a um pub, os clássicos electrodomésticos da Dualit e a vibe de farm house no geral.

I am writing to you from this same table that both serves as a working and dining place. This is where we spend most of our time, facing the garden that we would have liked to have remodelled this spring, with Ripley keeping us company in his bed or, taking advantage while he still fits, in our lap. I hope that soon this table will be fat with people, half-full wine glasses, bread crumbs, bits of cheese and crumpled napkins, keepers of all of our shared secrets.
Escrevo-vos desta mesma mesa que tanto desempenha a função de secretária como de local de refeições. É aqui que passamos a maioria do nosso tempo, de frente para o quintal que gostaríamos de ter remodelado esta primavera e com o Ripley a fazer-nos companhia na sua cama ou, aproveitando que ainda cabe, ao colo. Espero que em breve esta mesa se encontre gorda de gente com taças de vinho pela metade, migalhas pão, restos de queijo e guardanapos amarrotados, guardiões de todos os segredos aqui derramados.
