A girls trip to São Miguel
This post tells the story of a trip to a volcanic island, São Miguel. A clod in the middle of the Atlantic, painted with all the possible shades of green in nature. Thanks to the weak mobile signal on this island, two friends get lost many times, using their instincts and sense of orientation to find not only their way back to the hotel but also back to themselves. Fernando Pessoa wrote: "A rainy day is as beautiful as a sunny day. Both exist; each one as they are.” On this trip they learn to enjoy the wind and strong rain showers. They get muddy, plunge into volcanic springs, and laugh at their own foolishness. Thus, they conclude that sometimes it's necessary to pierce the fog, to smell the perfume of the wet soil, and to extract from these small things great emotions. In this island they are more like fish than humans, spending much of their time inside natural pools that the volcano heats, finally finding the ability to relax and enjoy the beauty of each moment. Despite the immense recommendations sent to them, on most of the nights they choose not to follow their plan and stay in the hotel instead. On one occasion they end up eating a pack of cookies for dinner and swimming in a heated pool, feeling the rain fainting on their skin in the company of a truly excellent glass of wine. Without knowing whether the days that spent in São Miguel were lived or dreamed, they return home still drunk, not from the wine, but from an incomprehensible nostalgia that traveling always brings to them.
Este post conta a história de uma visita a uma ilha vulcânica, um torrão no meio do Atlântico, pintado de todos os verdes que a natureza tem: São Miguel. Nela, duas amigas perdem-se múltiplas vezes graças à fraca rede móvel, recorrendo aos seus instintos e sentido de orientação para encontrarem não só o caminho para casa mas também de volta a si mesmas. Fernando Pessoa escreveu: “Um dia de chuva é tão belo como um dia de sol. Ambos existem; cada um como é.” Nesta viagem aprendem a apreciar ventanias soltas e chuvas tempestivas, sujam-se de lama, mergulham em nascentes vulcânicas e riem das suas próprias tolices. Assim concluem que às vezes é preciso furar o nevoeiro, cheirar o perfume a terra molhada, e extrair destas pequenas coisas grandes emoções. Nesta ilha são mais peixe que pessoa, passando grande parte do tempo dentro das águas que o vulcão aquece encontrando finalmente a capacidade de relaxar e apreciar a beleza de cada momento. Apesar das imensas recomendações que lhes são feitas, na maioria das noites escolhem fugir ao plano optando por ficar no hotel em que estão hospedadas, acabando por comer um pacote de bolachas ao jantar e nadando na piscina aquecida, sentindo o desmaiar da chuva na sua pele na companhia de um vinho deveras excelente. Sem saberem se os dias que passaram em São Miguel foram dias vividos ou sonhados, regressam a casa ainda embriagadas não do vinho que beberam, mas sim de uma nostalgia incompreensível que arte de viajar lhes proporciona.
3 days and a half in São Miguel, travel guide:
(Unfortunately we weren't able to visit much of what we planned due to the bad weather. However, I decided to include everything in this guide as it might be useful for you. Everything we have been able to visit is marked with an asterisk)
1st day:
Go to “lagoa das empanadas”. If the weather is good I suggest canoeing. That can be done both at the empanadas or sete cidades lagoon. I think you need to book ahead.
Then visit both “lagoa do canário” and “lagoa de santiago” *
Visit “lagoa das sete cidades” and the Monte Palace hotel (an abandoned hotel from where you get the most incredible view of this lagoon. Because the building is abandoned it's almost a monument in itself). *
Go to “termas da ferraria” and dive into the sea, the water is hot all year round. Tip: warm water depends on the tide, so check at what time the tide is low before planning your visit. The temperature of the sea reaches 37 degrees celsius. *
Watch the sunset in the mosteiros. *
3 dias e meio em são miguel, roteiro:
(Infelizmente não nos foi possível visitar muito daquilo que tinhamos planeado graças ao mau tempo. De qualquer forma decidi incluir tudo neste roteiro umas vez que as dicas vos poderão ser úteis. Tudo aquilo que conseguimos visitar está assinalado com um asterisco. )
Primeiro dia:
Ir à lagoa das empanadas. Se tiver bom tempo, fazer um passeio de canoa. Canoagem é algo que se pode fazer tanto nas empanadas como na lagoa das sete cidades. Creio que é necessário marcar de antemão.
Seguir caminho à lagoa do canário e depois à de santiago. *
Visitar a lagoa das sete cidades e o hotel Monte Palace (um hotel abandonado que tem uma vista incrível do segundo piso. E como está tão degradado é quase um monumento por si só). *
Seguir para as termas da ferraria e tomar lá um banho no mar que é quente o ano inteiro. Dica: tomar ou não banho em água quente depende da maré, por isso vê a que horas a maré está baixa antes de planeares a tua visita. A temperatura do mar chega aos 37 graus. *
Ver o pôr do sol nos mosteiros. *
2nd day:
“Lagoa do fogo”, another insanely beautiful lagoon.
“Caldeira Velha”, lovely hot springs. *
“Lagoa do congro”, apparently is one of the most beautiful lagoons in this island and it doesn't come in many guides.
Visit the tea plantation “Gorreana”. It is the only tea plantation left in Europe and they give you free tea in there!!
Visit Santa Bárbara’s beach.
Segundo dia:
Lagoa do fogo.
Termas da Caldeira Velha. *
Lagoa do congro, que aparentemente é das mais bonitas nesta ilha e não aparece em muitos roteiros turísticos.
Plantação de chá gorreana. É o único sítio na Europa onde ainda se produz chá.
Visitar o areal de Santa Bárbara.
3rd day:
Drive towards Furnas and stop at pico do ferro viewpoint.
Visit Parque Terra Nostra which has lots to see (tip: wear a swimsuit that you don't mind disposing after, it will get damaged).*
For lunch have one of the typical stews cooked in the ground.
Visit “lagoa das furnas”.
Visit the “Poça da dona Bêja” for more hot baths.*
Eat bolo levedo (similar to muffin bread) at Glória Moniz.*
4th day:
As our flight was only at 1pm, on our last day we wanted to watch the sun rise from a place called “Ponta da Madrugada”. The sky was so grey that we ended up just having a lie in and having a big breakfast instead.
Terceiro dia:
Seguir em direcção às furnas e parar no miradouro pico do ferro.
Visitar o parque terra nostra que tem muito para ver (dica: levar fato de banho que se possa estragar). *
Almoçar nas furnas, o tal cozido das fumarolas. Necessário fazer reserva.
Ver a lagoa das furnas, e possivelmente dar um passeio de gaivota.
Vistar a poça da dona Bêja para mais banhos.*
Comer bolo levedo na Glória Moniz.*
Quarto dia:
Como o nosso voo era só à uma da tarde, para o último dia tínhamos planeado ver o nascer do sol da Ponta da Madrugada. Mas como o céu estava tão cinzento acabámos só por tomar um longo e delicioso pequeno almoço no nosso hotel.
Where to stay:
We stayed at the Azor Hotel and then at the Furnas Boutique Hotel. In both we were very well looked after. It’s worth mentioning how good breakfast was on both of these hotels, they serve all kinds of eggs made in the moment, the sweetest azorean pineapple and a delicious fresh cheese that I have been unsuccessfully trying to find in London supermarkets since then.
Onde Ficar:
Nós ficámos no Azor Hotel e depois no Furnas boutique hotel. Em ambos fomos muito bem recebidas. Há que destacar os pequenos-almoços destes hotéis, ambos maravilhosos, servem todo o tipo de ovos feitos no momento, ananás docinho como só há nos Açores e um queijo fresco que até hoje guardo da minha memória gustativa.
