Garden transformation
The transformation of a house into a home is a laborious process. If on the one hand, I'm tired of doing renovations and having the house always full of people and rubbish, on the other hand, I'm very happy that we managed to renovate the bathroom and the garden before our baby arrived.
A transformação de uma casa num lar é um processo laborioso. Se por um lado estou cansada de fazer obras em casa e de a ter sempre cheia de gente e pó, por outro estou muito feliz de termos renovado a casa-de-banho e o jardim antes do nosso bebé chegar.
Although I really like grass and lots of greenery, after experiencing our first winter with Ripley I quickly realized that we needed to find a solution because we spent the day cleaning the floor as he always carried a lot of mud on his paws when he came in and out from the garden. When we move into a house we have an idea of what we want to do with it and over time these ideas change according to our needs. There's nothing like inhabiting the space before making any kind of changes to its structure.
Apesar de eu gostar muito de relva e de verde, depois de experienciar o primeiro inverno com o Ripley rapidamente fiquei a perceber que precisávamos de arranjar uma solução porque passávamos o dia a limpar o chão pois nas patas ele trazia sempre muita lama quando vinha do jardim. Quando nos mudamos para uma casa temos uma ideia do que queremos fazer com ela e com o tempo essas ideias vão mudando consoante as nossas necessidades. Nada como habitar o espaço antes de fazer qualquer tipo de alterações na sua estrutura.
When we finally decided what we wanted to do with this space I made a drawing (a terrible one!) and shared it on my Instagram. To my help came the incredible Clara Guedes, a landscape architect, who sent me a DM saying “it looks like you might need a little help”.
Quando decidimos finalmente o que queríamos fazer neste espaço eu fiz um desenho que mais parecia executado por uma criança de 5 anos e partilhei-o no meu Instagram. Ao meu auxílio veio a incrível Clara Guedes, uma arquiteta paisagista, que me enviou uma DM dizendo “parece que precisas de ajuda”.
Although both Martin and I are very creative and have very strong opinions about the aesthetics of our house, Clara's help was invaluable. All changes proposed by her were accepted by us. She respected our ideas and turned them into their best version. Also, her knowledge of where to plant what was crucial as neither Martin nor I understand much about gardening. Clara provided us with a garden with little maintenance but still full of life and colour.
Apesar de tanto eu como o Martin sermos muito criativos e termos opiniões muito fortes no que toca à estética da nossa casa a ajuda da Clara foi preciosa. Todas as alterações propostas por ela foram aceites por nós. Ela respeitou as nossas ideias e transformou-as na sua melhor versão. Para além disso, o seu conhecimento em termos de onde plantar o quê foi crucial uma vez que nem eu nem o Martin percebemos grande coisa de jardinagem. A Clara proporcionou-nos um jardim com pouca manutenção mas ainda assim cheio de vida e cor.
Well, let's talk about the shower that caused so much controversy on my Instagram and also among our friends and family. Although aware that in London it rains and is cold most of the year, I really wanted to have an outdoor shower. Now that the work is finished I can tell you that it was the best decision ever, not only is it super useful for showering Ripley but also for cooling me down on days when London feels like a sauna. Furthermore, the copper plumbing made by our plumber, James Ireland, is a a feature I absolutely love.
Ora bem, vamos lá falar do chuveiro que tanta polémica causou no meu Instagram e também entre os nossos amigos e familiares. Ainda que consciente de que em Londres chove e faz frio a maior parte do ano, eu queria muito ter um chuveiro de rua. Agora com a obra terminada posso-vos dizer que foi a melhor decisão de sempre, não só é super útil para dar banho ao Ripley como para me refrescar nos dias em que Londres parece uma sauna. Para além disso, a canalização de cobre feita pelo nosso canalizador, James Ireland, é um pormenor que eu amo!
This raised cement area where our fire pit is embedded was painted with Mallorca limewash paint by Bauwerk to waterproof it while maintaining a texture with depth and shadows similar to that of raw cement.
Esta parte elevada em cimento onde está embebida a nossa fogueira está pintada com tinta limewash Mallorca da Bauwerk de modo a impermeabilizar-lo mantendo ainda assim uma textura com sombras semelhante à do cimento cru.
The kitchen was also custom made by our builder Steve. In the Big Green Egg we have made pizzas, grilled fish, slow-cooked meats and various culinary experiences. Having this space is almost like having an extra room in the house. This garden has brought us many happy evenings, whether playing cards with my parents after our wedding, blowing out candles on my thirtieth birthday or simply chatting until way past our bedtime with longtime friends.

A cozinha também foi feita à medida pelo nosso construtor, o Steve. No Big Green Egg temos feito pizzas, grelhados, cozeduras lentas e várias experiências culinárias. Ter este espaço é quase como ter uma divisão extra na casa. Tem nos trazido muitos serões felizes este jardim, seja a jogar às cartas com os meus pais depois do nosso casamento, a apagar as velas no meu trigésimo aniversário ou simplesmente a conversar até às tantas com amigos de longa data.
