Being a child of the ocean, I confess that I would like to be spending August with my feet in the sand, unfortunately this year it wasn't possible. With age you end up accumulating responsibilities and, suddenly, August is no longer that "salty" month from my childhood, but a month of work like any other. Still, London offers fun programs for when the sun dares to peer through the clouds.

I've told you that although I have lived here for almost five years, I still feel like a tourist. Kew Gardens is one of those attractions advertised everywhere, in the tube, in Time-Out, tour guides, etc, but that, somehow, until this day I had never had the privilege of visiting.

If I could describe Kew Gardens in one word it would be: magnificent. For those who don't know it, Kew conserves the largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collection in the world, it's kind of the plant zoo where more than seven million different species are preserved. Of course, nothing would be more precious than seeing them in their natural habitat, however, it's still pretty incredible that, without leaving the city where I live, I get the opportunity to travel through the world's flora. Visiting such a vast plant archive makes me reflect on how small I am, and how much more is out there...

While Hyde Park is flooded with people on hot days, in Kew Gardens it's possible to find the tranquility that the center of the city lacks. Kew is ideal for a family picnic, a trip to the tropics, or simply to read a book under the centuries-old shadows of the trees that have been living there for so many dynasties.

Sendo eu uma filha do oceano, confesso-vos que gostaria de estar a passar o meu Agosto com os pés na areia mas este ano não foi possível. Com o tempo as responsabilidades crescem e, de repente, o Agosto já não é o mês salgado que foi durante minha vida inteira, mas sim um mês de trabalho como outro qualquer. Contudo Londres oferece programas bem divertidos para os dias em que sol se atreve a espreitar por ente as nuvens.

Já vos tinha dito que, apesar de cá viver há quase cinco anos, ainda me sinto uma turista. Kew Gardens é uma das aquelas atrações que se vê anunciadas por todo o lado, no metro, na time-out, nos guias turísticos, etc, mas que ainda assim não tinha tido o privilégio de visitar.

Se pudesse descrever Kew Gardens numa palavra seria: magnificente. Para quem o desconhece, aqui conserva-se a maior e mais diversificada coleção botânica e micológia do mundo. Kew Gardens é um género de Zoo das plantas, aqui preservam-se mais de sete milhões de diferentes espécies. É claro que nada seria mais precioso do que as ver no seu habitat natural, no entanto, é incrível que, sem sair da cidade em que vivo, tenha a oportunidade de viajar pelas floras do mundo. Estar perante tamanho arquivo da vida vegetal faz me reflectir sobre a minha pequenez e o quanto ainda tenho por descobrir...

Enquanto o Hyde Park se inunda de gente nos dias de calor, aqui é possível encontrar a tranquilidade de que carece o centro da cidade. Kew Gardens é ideal para um piquenique em família, para uma viagem até aos trópicos, ou simplesmente para se ler um livro debaixo das sombras centenárias das árvores que lá moram há muitas dinastias.

Book your ticket online, it will be cheaper. Also, google "discount vouchers for Kew Gardens", you might get lucky like I did and get two tickets for the price of one. At the moment there is this offer going on.
I thought the food in the park was a bit overpriced and not very tasty so you might as well prepare a picnic or go for lunch somewhere nice in the village of Kew.
Wear comfortable shoes, there's a lot to see.

Compra o teu bilhete online porque sai mais barato. Não perdes nada em fazer um google de "discounted vouchers for Kew Gardens", pode ser que tenhas a sorte que eu tive e que consigas obter dois ingressos pelo preço de um. De momento está esta oferta a decorrer.
Achei a comida no parque demasiado cara e pouco saborosa. Podes sempre preparar um piquenique ou comer antes da visita num dos muitos pitorescos restaurante da vila de Kew.
Usa sapatos confortáveis, há muito para ver.
